James Busby was born in Birmingham, Alabama. He attended public schools for his entire education up to college. He studied music (piano and conducting) at Westminster Choir College in Princeton NJ, where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1985 and a master’s degree in 1992. He received a second master’s degree in musicology from the City University in New York in 2007. A yoga practitioner and teacher since 1992, James holds teacher certifications from the Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA and Spirit Rock in Woodacre, CA.
For 26 years he was on the music faculty, and later administration, at Saint Ann’s School (preK-12, 1100 students) in Brooklyn, NY. In Brooklyn he founded and conducted a community chorus, Grace Chorale of Brooklyn. In 2011 he was appointed the assistant head at The Buckley School (K-12, 840 students) in Sherman Oaks, CA and became Head there in 2013. While at Buckley he oversaw the completion of three buildings, led the community in revising its mission statement and helped institute an Equity and Justice curriculum across divisions and constituents. He left independent education in 2018 to pursue opportunities in music and the fields of wellness and mindfulness.
