VOX Femina LA | Youth Programs

Youth Programs

During the 2016-2017 Season, VOX introduced its newly-developed Youth Outreach Program, serving over 500 students in middle and high schools throughout Los Angeles!

VOX offers the following programming to interested schools and students:

“I feel so powerful as an individual! I just did something so awesome!”

- Jill

MUSIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

VOX's Music Enrichment Program aims to collaborate with middle schools and high schools in underserved Los Angeles communities to introduce students to the choral art form through the presentation of its annual Youth Concert during school hours.

Up to 750 public school students will be bussed to the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles for a field trip to this concert, conducted by VOX's Assistant Conductor and featuring the full VOX chorus singing 50 minutes of repertoire, along with relevant commentary to engage and enlighten the students about choral music.

This Project was funded (in part) by a grant from Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, Dwight Stuart Youth Foundation, and the Ella Fitzgerald Charitable Foundation.

“VOX's workshop with the general population offered a wonderful introduction to choral music...! Music education is so critical for these students, and exposure to such a top-notch chorus and to the brilliant Dr. Iris Levine, is an extraordinary opportunity for our school, as is the opportunity for these students, many of whom have never attended a formal music concert, to attend a VOX concert free of charge.”

– Ruth Ballenger, Ramona Convent School

CHOIR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

VOX will expand its Choir Mentorship Program to six or more high school women’s choirs during the current season! This program will focus on encouragement and hands-on engagement. Choirs involved will receive:

  • A free set of scores to a piece in VOX’s season repertoire.

  • Two workshops conducted by Iris S. Levine, Founder and Artistic Director of VOX, and VOX's Assistant Conductor, to help prepare the choir for its own performance of that piece.

  • Free and exclusive attendance to a VOX Dress Rehearsal to hear the same piece of music performed by VOX

  • Free attendance to the final VOX performance

"Vox gave me a lot of confidence in my musical skills and I learned new singing skills that I will carry with me for the rest of my life."

"It was empowering to see women do what they love so passionately and beautifully."

“It was wonderful from start to finish! VOX rehearsals were the most efficiently and expertly run practices I've ever experienced and also the most fun, and that's a balance that VOX, and especially Iris, has shown me is attainable. I'm a better person and singer for having been surrounded by such awesome, talented, kind women!”  -Lucy Brooke, Choral Scholar

ANNUAL CONCERT FOR YOUTH

Up to 800 public school students will be bussed to the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles for a field trip to this concert, conducted by VOX's Assistant Conductor and featuring the full VOX chorus singing 50 minutes of repertoire, along with relevant commentary to engage and enlighten the students about choral music.

PAST EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

From 2013-2016 VOX continued the tradition of inspiring the next generation of artists through collaboration with Mira Costa High School’s Advanced Women’s Chorale. VOX offered its Choir Mentorship program to Mira Costa, and the Chorale sang in the second half of VOX’s March 2016 concert, “Women of Note,” both by themselves and with VOX. Here are some responses from the young ladies of Mira Costa:

In 2011-2012, VOX collaborated with CONTRA-TIEMPO and with the support of the James Irvine Foundation to bring workshops combining music, voice and movement to young children in 3 schools across Los Angeles.  VOX continued this tradition in 2012-2013, working with the young women of Mira Costa High School’s Advanced Women Chorale under the direction of Michael Hayden.  We were delighted to have the choir perform with us on stage at our November 2012 concert.
