Voices Awakened | VOX Femina LA

We’re highlighting Italy’s artistic treasures, beginning with the music of the Ospedali, written for young orphaned women, featuring Antonio Vivaldi’s exquisite music and text. Then, composer Jocelyn Hagen’s thrilling new commission breathes life into Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks utilizing an innovative syncing technology that seamlessly blends picture to music. Immerse yourself in the wonder of Da Vinci’s observations, inventions and musings in what will be an unforgettable multimedia concert experience.

"Rivers of ink have been dedicated to the study of the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci. His genius has been articulated by scholars, historians, artists, engineers, and scientists for centuries, and the legacy of his work will continue to endure the test of time because of his remarkable synthesis of art, science and design. When I first began researching da Vinci and his notebooks, I was overwhelmed. How was I to condense this huge body of work into one 35 minute symphony? (Over 5,000 pages of manuscript have been found.) There was no way I could include the entirety of this work, so my goal became serving the spirit of his work and his curious mind.

These words begin renowned composer Jocelyn Hagen's program notes from her new commission "The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci." VOX Femina is thrilled to have been a part of a consortium supporting the creation of this piece, in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the death of da Vinci, and the cutting edge multimedia presentation at its center. Jocelyn Hagen's THE NOTEBOOKS OF LEONARDO DA VINCI premiered in 2019 in Minnesota, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci. His handwriting, sketches, and words come to life through music using the latest in video syncing technology: Muséik, from Ion Concert Media.

What if classical composers conceived of music and visuals simultaneously, resulting in an immersive audio-visual experience for concert-goers? Composer Jocelyn Hagen is exploring the new frontier of video syncing technology with a new work for choir, orchestra, and a new member of the orchestra—video projections.
