Two choirs celebrated milestone anniversaries in 2017: Elektra turned 30 and VOX Femina Los Angeles turned 20!

To mark these occasions, the first ever Women’s Choir Symposium 2017 took place in Los Angeles on June 20-21, 2017 (just prior to the annual Chorus America Conference).

About the first ever Women's Choir Symposium

Meeting by chance at conferences and festivals, there's never enough time to get to know each other. This was the main goal of our Women’s Choir Symposium 2017. The planning model was simple: keep it casual, interactive, and affordable. We did not book any “headliners” but instead shared our collective knowledge and experience through interactive sessions. This ‘first ever’ Symposium strengthened the network of conductors of adult women’s choirs.

We welcomed all conductors of changed women’s voices – including senior high school, collegiate and adult choirs. To keep the program focused and great networking possible in our short time together, we asked that conductors who work only with unchanged voices not register.

Based in Los Angeles, VOX Femina performed and served as a lab choir.

What to Expect

  • A “first-ever” symposium that will strengthen the network of conductors of adult women’s choirs. Both men and women conductors are invited to attend.

  • All sessions, hotel, restaurant within walking distance of the Colburn School of Music, host venue for this symposium.

  • Four sessions of repertoire sharing (newly commissioned works, music by women composers, “social justice music,” “concert hall music,”). Registrants will be asked to supply repertoire to share with all symposium attendees.  Details to follow.

  • A session on “how to commission and co-commission new works.”

  • A session on finding repertoire for women’s voices.

  • Participation in the use of effective warmups and voice building

  • Interactive opportunities for socializing and sharing ideas

  • Tuesday’s dinner and Wednesday’s breakfast included in registration fees

  • Discounted Chorus America hotel rate at the Omni Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Check on the Chorus America site for updated information.
