2019-2020 ~ Our 23rd Season

Virtual VOX: Refugee by Moira Smiley

 

Due to the circumstances caused by the Covid-19 global pandemic, VOX cancelled two planned concerts in the 23rd season. However on July 1st, VOX released it's first "virtual" choir performance online, with Moira Smiley's "Refugee." Originally an anchor piece in the planned March 2020 concert, Journey to Refuge: Finding Home, the current state of political unrest, economic instability, and discomfort in facing the unknown made it's message of empathy and understanding more important than ever before.

Voices Awakened: da Vinci, Vivaldi, VOX

VOX highlighted Italy's artistic treasures beginning with music of the Ospedali, written for young orphaned women in Venice, and featuring Antonio Vivaldi's exquisite music and text. Then, composer Jocelyn Hagen's brand new composition breathed life into Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks with a cutting edge syncing technology MUSEIK from Ion Concert Technology. VOX was joined by guest singers from Mira Costa High School Choral Union, College of the Canyons, and Pasadena City College, and a chamber choir composed of musicians from the Orchid Quartet and Calico Winds.

Celebrating Pride, VOX paid tribute to the LGBTQ+ community. Featuring the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles and a new commission by celebrated transgender composer Mari Esabel Valverde, the concert also honored the 50th anniversary of Stonewall.

VOX's first annual Concert for Youth, reaching over 600 students who were bussed from across LA County, or walked from nearby schools, to a daytime concert featuring the full VOX choir in a 50 minute music presentation led by VOX Assistant Conductor Lori Marie Rios.

Fulfilling the Dream - A Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.

 

VOX performed alongside nine other choirs from across Los Angeles at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles in a concert to celebrate the legacy and profound impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event was dedicated to fostering community interaction and inspiring creative action towards socail justice.

Our 21st season concluded with a a journey from the hills of Appalachia to the stages in Greenwich Village, following the threads of folk music that are woven deeply throughout our country. These tales of love, songs of protest, and hymns of praise made up the content of our final concert of the season, as we explored our roots, the stories and traditions that are the foundation of American folk music.

Tapestry International Celebration of Women's Choirs
Vancouver, British Columbia

Over the first weekend in May, the women of VOX Femina traveled from Los Angeles to beautiful Vancouver, BC, for the Tapestry International Festival of Women's Choirs. VOX was joined by singers from three other women's choirs: host Elektra Women's Choir from Vancouver, Gardabaer Women's Choir from Iceland, and Frisches Ei from Japan. Over the four days of the festival, the women worked together to present two exquisite concerts, singing both as individual choirs and raising their voices as a whole, and in the native language of each participating choir.

VOX participated in the Mount Saint Mary's University Women in Music Festival which brought together a diverse group of women artists at the Doheny Mansion for discussions, workshops, and performances to celebrate the power of music as a vehicle for positive social change. Performers included Grammy Award-winning folk singer Rhiannon Giddens and hip hop/son jarocho artist Maya Jupiter, with VOX closing the festival.

On Friday, March 16th, VOX was honored to sing at the American Choral Directors Association conference. Surrounded by choral directors and educators from across the western region, the women of VOX Femina took to the stage to perform in the auspicious Friday evening concert, where they sang their hearts out and were greeted with a standing ovation from the audience - high praise indeed!

We started our 21st season by doing what VOX does best - giving voice to women.The opening concert featured a newly commissioned work for women's voices, composed by Ron Kean, entitled "The Journey of Harriet Tubman." Through songs of resistance and pride, we honored the legacy of Harriet Tubman, Malala Yousafzai, and ourselves among the countless women who have persisted throughout history and into today.

We ended with a new beginning. By raising our voices with a dynamic new commission by Jocelyn Hagen, and a dance commission by Sarah Swenson's Vox Dance Theatre, VOX Femina renewed its commitment to create a world that affirms the worth and dignity of every person. A pre-concert talk with Musicologist Marcela Pan and commissioning artists Jocelyn Hagen and Sarah Swenson also occurred prior to the event.

The first concert, “VOX20: Reflections,” is a celebration of VOX’s history, featuring performances by special guests, VOX alumnae, and others from the VOX family tree. The concert also features a commission by Christina Whitten Thomas. VOX Femina (Latin for “female voice”) has been referred to as a “popular force” by Pasadena Weekly, with a “bright, balanced sound” according to The Los Angeles Times.

Featuring guest artist Vicki Peterson!

Vicki Peterson is an American rock musician  (guitar, vocals) and songwriter.

In 1981, she founded The Bangs, later renamed The Bangles, with her sister Debbi Peterson, and Susanna Hoffs. She later wrote and recorded with the Psycho Sisters and Continental Drifters, performing extensively in the US and Europe. Her more recent work has included screenwriting, recording, producing and the rare solo acoustic performance.

On May 7, the newly formed Trans Chorus of Los Angeles presents their debut performance, TRUE COLORS – Celebrating our Authentic Selves. This historic performance will include performances by allies from VOX Femina LA and Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles.

The Trans Chorus of Los Angeles, Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles and VOX will sing selections of songs that highlight the power of music to change the world.  Please join in supporting and celebrating TCLA – a new voice for the transgender community in Los Angeles.
